Tailgating Tips to Help Save Money & the Planet

By September 3, 2015August 4th, 2020No Comments

It’s time to break out the coolers, dust off the grill, and put up the tent, as we prepare for another great year of cheering on our Tigers.  The impact of our presence, however, isn’t just felt by opponents inside Jordan-Hare, but all across campus as thousands of fans converge on Auburn.  To help lighten the load, while still having a great time with AU family and friends, consider trying out some of our green tailgating tips.  If we all do our part, we’ll be sure to sustain the game for years to come.  War Eagle!

  • When stocking up on your tailgate supplies, don’t forget your reusable bags! They are larger, more durable, and help keep plastic bags out of landfills.
  • When preparing for your gameday spread, consider buying in bulk. This reduces packaging material and gives you a better value!
  • Did you know Auburn has its own meat market with a variety of fresh beef and pork? They also offer catering!
  • Try grilling some veggies to compliment your burgers and hot dogs.
  • Carpool to gameday with other members of the Auburn Family to reduce emissions and save money!
  • Hop on Tiger Transit or walk to help keep the air clean for players and fans!
  • Ditch the disposable and opt for the reusable to save money and reduce waste. Consider using reusable plates, cups, utensils, and tablecloths.
  • Choose aluminum & plastic instead of glass & styrofoam.  Then look for the 300+ recycling bins & bags throughout campus to give your aluminum and plastic a new life.
  • Unplug your appliances, such as grills and TVs, before heading into Jordan-Hare. This will reduce energy usage and save money.
  • Don’t let your leftover food go to waste! Bring containers and save the delicious food for another day.
  • Stay hydrated by bringing your reusable water bottle into the stadium and then look for the free water refill stations located throughout the concourses.
  • Don’t forget to keep an eye out for sustainability-themed information and efforts during this year’s AU Goes Green Game on October 3 against San Jose State.
