If you haven’t noticed yet, we’ve added a new section to our digest called “Listen and Learn”. In each digest edition, we’ll share a book and podcast recommendation to help you explore sustainability topics, perspectives, and ideas. Whether you are looking to dive deeper into sustainability or simply pick up a new hobby, we hope these recommendations inspire you to keep learning and engaging with the world around you.

Of course, building a reading list can get expensive, and buying a new book every two weeks may not fit your budget. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to access books for free or at a discount:

  • Get a Library Card: A library card is one of the best resources available, and we highly recommend getting one! Many libraries let you request a card online if you live far from your hometown. However, Auburn University students are eligible to get library cards from both Auburn Public Library and Opelika Public Library
  • Libby: Libby is a free library reading app that lets you borrow eBooks and audiobooks. All you need to do is add your library card information and start borrowing! You can even connect multiple library cards to one account.
  • Hoopla: Another library-based app, Hoopla lets you borrow eBooks, audiobooks, comics, movies, and even music using your library card.
  • ThriftBooks: ThriftBooks is an online platform that offers a wide variety of used books at affordable prices. This is a perfect way to grow your personal library and invest in some great books!
  • Half Price Books: This store is another great source for discounted used books. While there isn’t a location near Auburn, it’s worth checking to see if there’s a store in your hometown.

These are just a few of the many ways to find books without spending a fortune. From local thrift stores and used bookstores to online marketplaces and library apps, there are plenty of options to discover your next great read. We hope you’ll check out our recommendations, learn something new, and continue growing your understanding of sustainability. Happy reading!
