On Thursday, February 26, 2026, the Office of Sustainability held its next screening in our spring semester film series: Future Council. This 2024 documentary follows Damon Gameau as he takes eight kids on a road trip across Europe to seek solutions to our greatest ecological challenges.
Throughout the film, the children confront a symbolic character named “Groth.” “Groth” represents humanity’s constant pursuit of more and its negative impact on the planet. Spinning off the word growth, it is critiquing unchecked growth and overconsumption.

A depiction of “Groth”
The group, made up of kids from all different countries, shares a common interest in protecting the planet. They have already devoted their childhood to making sure there is a safe and healthy future for all of us. From speaking with companies like Nestle and ING, who have a major impact on the environment and “Groth,” they realized their voice mattered. Though these meetings were challenging, they inspired the kids to form a “future council.” The goal is to get youth voices into corporate boardrooms so the people most affected by long-term decisions can help shape them.

This film left us inspired and hopeful. Seeing young kids advocate so boldly for their future reminds us that meaningful change is possible. If they can do it, then so can we!
