Auburn Stormwater Program

Group ~ Auburn Stormwater Program

The Auburn University Stormwater Research Facility (Auburn Stormwater) is housed in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering within the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering.  It has improved community sustainability through innovative research, impactful education, and applied innovations to address stormwater issues.

Established in 2009, Auburn Stormwater is home to a 10-acre outdoor research center that evaluates and improves stormwater management practices to protect water quality and reduce environmental impact from construction activities and urban runoff.

Auburn Stormwater conducts full-scale evaluations of approaches, providing practical innovations to improve best management practices. It also serves as an independent, third-party testing facility, ensuring the development of effective, field-tested solutions.

In addition to research and testing, Auburn Stormwater conducts education and outreach programs, training regulators, designers, contractors, and students on sustainable stormwater practices. Hands-on training programs demonstrate proper installation, maintenance, and inspection techniques, empowering stormwater professionals to implement sustainable practices in real-world settings.

Since its establishment, the program has received 35 research grants totaling $8.7M. Research findings have been adopted as standard practice by the Alabama Department of Transportation and outlined in the Alabama Handbook for Erosion and Sediment Control, as well as by many other states across the U.S.

The program has supported 31 graduate students (MS and PhD) and over 300 undergraduate researchers. In addition, over 1,600 individuals have participated in training workshops at the research facility.
