a research associate in the Institute for Resources, Environment, and Sustainability at the University of British Columbia. They are an Indigenous geographer who focuses on Indigenous cultural and political responses to human-driven climate and environmental change. They also direct the Geographic Indigenous Futures Collaboratory, an international research group that works with Indigenous communities on geographic-based projects. Dr. Smiles holds a PhD in Geography from The Ohio State University.
