The Auburn University International Cultural Center in the Office of International Programs is offering a free lunch seminar, 'Face Coverings Around the World: Health, Cultural Attitudes and Symbolism in the Covid-19 Era,' as a part of the Window to Your World seminar series. The event is free and open to Auburn University faculty, staff and students.
The seminar will feature a panel of experts and presentations, including:
• Dr. Fred Kam, director, Auburn University Medical Clinic – Presenting on current medical and health information related to COVID-19
• Kerry Baharanyi, MSW, LICSW, PIP, clinical social worker/therapist – Presenting on behavioral, psychological, environmental and cultural stigmas
• Sumaiya Islam, Auburn University doctoral candidate, chemical engineering – Presenting on country-specific cultural practices
• Wunpini Fatimata Mohammed, Ph.D., assistant professor of global media industries, University of Georgia – Presenting on global media and religious perspectives
• Elijah Gaddis, Ph.D., professor of history, Auburn University College of Liberal Arts – Presenting a summary of research on masks and face coverings and their symbolism worldwide
“The Window to Your World seminar series is important to internationalizing Auburn’s campus and educating the community on the historical context and current climate of different cultures around the globe,” said Adeola Fayemi, manager of the International Cultural Center. “The seminar is intended to help people break down stereotypes, build connections across cultures and cultivate productive discussions that lead to informed awareness and understanding.”
Uniquely, this campus-wide learning opportunity offers a diverse collection of perspectives on the relationship between multiple regions and their differing cultural and political practices, therefore providing applicable knowledge to numerous disciplinary approaches.
