Alabama has one of the highest opioid prescribing rates in the country. These drugs (including heroin, oxycodone, hydroconone, morphine, and fentanyl) work to diminish pain and produce feelings of relaxation and euphoria. To combat the opioid crisis in the state, Harrison School of Pharmacy faculty members Drs. Brent Fox, Haley Phillippe, and Karen Marlowe, in collaboration with the Alabama Department of Mental Health, created the Opioid Training Institute. Their research focuses, respectively, on improving medication outcomes with pharmacy informatics education, outpatient family medicine, and pain management.
