SUMMARY:Global Coral Reef Conservation: An Ongoing Fight
DESCRIPTION:Join Wild Science for the March Wild Science talk with Dr. Kelly Dunning!\nThis talk focuses on Dr. Dunning's recent research in the Cayman Islands where the government plans to destroy an area the size of 10 football fields worth of pristine coral reefs. She will discuss how everyday people are fighting this project\, and how the cruise industry is trying to do similar things throughout the Caribbean that will destroy reefs for private corporate gain. \nDr. Kelly Dunning is a Professor of Conservation at Auburn University School of Forestry and Wildlife. Her lab\, the Conservation Governance lab\, solves problems at the intersection of ecosystems and society. She holds a PhD from MIT\, an MSc from Oxford\, and is a Fulbright Scholar. She is author of the 2018 book Managing Coral Reefs\, which details how low-income communities can work collaboratively to manage coral reefs sustainably.

SUMMARY:A Tale of Two Lemurs
DESCRIPTION:Red Clay Brewing Company\, Oct. 24 from 6 – 8 p.m.\nJoin Dr. Sarah Zohdy for 'A Tale of Two Lemurs: Stories of the Fascinating Ecology & Evolution of the World's Most Endangered Mammals.' The island of Madagascar is home to some of the strangest animals on the planet. Perhaps some of the most well-known residents are lemurs\, small primates only found on the island. \nDr. Zohdy\, who has spent over a decade studying these fascinating and adorable creatures\, will share first-hand tales of the smallest primate in the world (the mouse lemur)\, the most endangered in the world (the greater bamboo lemur)\, and what is possibly the oddest looking creature on the planet (the aye-aye). Find out about Madagascar’s complex biodiversity and how conservation efforts are making a difference for lemurs and other island residents. \nWild Science is a talk series featuring scientists who conduct research to answer questions about the natural world. Featured once a month at Red Clay Brewing Company\, come learn exciting facts about nature in Alabama and beyond! \nPresented by Auburn University School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences Wildlife Graduate Student Club.

SUMMARY:Science Pub
DESCRIPTION:Come beat the heat this summer with a cold drink and cool serving of science! At the June Science Pub\\, guests will be tackling augmented reality (AR) through the lens of Geoscience— What is it? And how can it be used both in research and education? There will be Geoscience’s new AR sandboxes to make it even more special. And don’t worry\\, both kids and adults will have the opportunity to dig into the fun!\nThis month\'s Science Pub will be presented by guest scientist Dr. Karen McNeal from the Department of Geosciences \nThe family-friendly event is free and open to the public. No science background is required\\, and no question is too silly to ask.\n<p class=\'au_today_p\'>There is no cost to attend the Science Pub\\, but proceeds from drink sales will benefit the Alabama Natural Heritage Program at Auburn University and their efforts to conserve rare species in Alabama\\, such as the Indigo snake.</p>\n<p class=\'au_today_p\'>Sodas and food will also be available for purchase at the Science Pub.</p>\n

SUMMARY:Shining a Light on Aliens: The Physics Behind the Search for Extra-terrestrial Life
DESCRIPTION:Almost all of the information we have about the Universe outside of our solar systems comes from the light (electromagnetic radiation) we observe from astrophysical objects. This is also true when it comes to the search for extra-terrestrial life. At the February Science Pub we’ll look at a number of “alien”-related mysteries—from the strange 1977 “Wow!” signal to the recent supposed “alien megastructure” around Tabby’s star. Join Dr. Stuart Loch to unravel these puzzles using physics and learn how physicists can probe the atmospheres of far-off planets for clues of alien life!

SUMMARY:Science Pub: Do Spiders Really Have Superpowers?
DESCRIPTION: \nAlthough most people are deathly afraid of spiders\\, very few of the >40\\,000 species known are actually dangerous to humans. While spiders can have complex venoms and incredible strategies for hunting prey\\, they have a host of other amazing abilities. Did you know that spider silk is stronger than steel or that it can also be used to fly\\, survive underwater\\, and as safety lines for jumping nearly 50 times their body length? \nJoin COSAM at the very first Science Pub to learn from Dr. Jason Bond everything you ever wanted to know about spiders and more! \nAll ages are welcome to attend Science Pub events. Proceeds from the \'Drymarchon Berliner Weisse\' drink at Red Clay Brewery benefit the Alabama Natural Heritage Program at Auburn University and their efforts to conserve rare species in Alabama\\, such as the Indigo snake. Sodas will also be available for purchase at the Science Pub location. \nThis is an extension of COSAM\'s normal “Science Café” program and will alternate\\, typically every other month\\, with the normal Science Café in Auburn.
