SUMMARY:Climate Conversations: Tipping Points
DESCRIPTION:With continued climate change\, elements of the Earth system may reach tipping points—abrupt\, dramatic changes with irreversible consequences—like the rapid collapse of ice sheets or dieback of the Amazon rainforest. Tipping points also exist in human systems: devastation from extreme weather and major stresses on food\, energy\, and water could accumulate and tilt society into a radically different state with new dynamics\, including mass migration or major economic shifts. However\, tipping points in human systems can also be positive and stem from rapidly spreading norms\, behaviors\, and technologies\, such as how battery storage could tip the power sector irreversibly towards renewable energy. Laurie Goering (Thomson Reuters Foundation) will moderate a conversation between Ilona M. Otto (University of Graz) and Rachael Shwom (Rutgers University) about the tipping points we are approaching\, how to prepare for those we may reach\, and how to encourage positive social tipping points for action on climate change. \nThe conversation will be a webcast on the Climate Conversations: Tipping Points webpage and Closed captioning will be provided. The conversation will include questions from the audience and will be recorded and available to view on the page after the event.

SUMMARY:A Conversation with Andy Yoder
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with the artist behind more than 250 shoe sculptures. \n Reserve your spot by registering for this event.   \nAbout Andy Yoder: Overboard\nOverboard features nearly 250 sculptures by artist Andy Yoder riffing off Nike Air Jordan 5s. One of the most iconic and recognizable athletic shoes in contemporary culture\, this specific model catapulted into popularity in 1990. That same year\, more than 80\,000 pairs of Nike brand shoes and work boots fell into the Pacific Ocean during a storm en route to the U.S. from South Korea\, prompting Dr. Curtis Ebbesmeyer’s groundbreaking study of maritime currents. Using unique serial numbers on each sneaker\, he and his researchers gathered data from beachcombers worldwide who found the shoes washed ashore. \nInstead of cloth or leather\, Yoder uses boxes\, bags\, posters\, and other discarded items – much like the salvaged and waterlogged shoes. “I’m a big believer in the possibility of second chances\, which is why this story has such appeal for me\,” the artist said. “Making art is a form of alchemy and being creative gives us the power to steer the ship\, rather than bobbing around like a sneaker lost at sea. With this in mind\, if you come across a shoe on the beach (or a flip flop\, or a bottle)\, do the right thing\, and toss it in the trash. You never know where it might go from there.”

SUMMARY:A Tree's View of History: A Conversation with Lacy M. Johnson
DESCRIPTION:The Forest School at the Yale School of the Environment\, Orion Magazine\, and the Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology present a conversation with Lacy M. Johnson on American history and the longleaf pine. Building off her recent linked essay on the longleaf pine’s integral role in the American slave trade\, Johnson will discuss the ways in which trees bear witness to the evolution of culture and what they may be able to tell us about ourselves now. She will also discuss how her research into coastal flooding has expanded her understanding of how rising water levels affect trees\, and what people can do to protect the landscapes they love. In conversation with her will be Mary Evelyn Tucker\, co-author of Journey of the Universe and co-founder of Yale’s Forum on Religion and Ecology. \nRegister via this link.

SUMMARY:The Marble Bowl: Citizen Science Takes the Field
DESCRIPTION:From September 3 through November 26th\, everyone can participate in the Marble Bowl by submitting observations of wild plants\, animals\, and fungi to one of two projects on the iNaturalist platform. This online site stores crowdsourced\, public observations of biological organisms. Listed below are the necessary steps to participate. \n\nVisit inaturalist.org and sign up for a free account. There is also a mobile application for smart devices.\nFollow the “The Marble Bowl” project to keep up with the current score.\n\nBe sure to join either the “Marble Bowl 2022 – Auburn University” or “Marble Bowl 2022 – University of Alabama” project to ensure your observations count and you’re contributing to the appropriate team. Only join one of the two projects or your observations will cancel each other out.\n\n\nTo document an observation\, you may shoot photos of wild organisms with your cell phone or camera.\n\nBecause cell phone photographs are automatically timestamped and geotagged\, all of the necessary information is already with the photograph when you upload it. If you prefer to take photos with a digital camera\, be sure to note the location and include it with your observation if the camera doesn’t geotag it for you.\n\n\nObservations may be uploaded to iNaturalist through a web browser or the app. As you submit observations\, the platform’s artificial intelligence will suggest an identification based off what is in the photo along with similar species that have already been observed nearby. You are allowed to suggest a different identification if you’re confident about what you saw. Select your species\, and then submit your citizen science observation.
