DESCRIPTION:OLLI Presents: 19th Century Textile Production and Natural Dye Practices in Alabama \nFree and open to the public \nFiber artist Nadene Mairesse discusses 19th-century textile production and plant-based dye practices in Alabama\, examining how these methods shaped daily life\, trade\, sustainability\, and cultural identity. Participants will gain insight into the materials\, techniques\, and historical contexts that define textile work in the region while considering how contemporary makers are reclaiming and reinterpreting these traditions today. \nThis program is made possible with support from the Alabama State Council on the Arts\, the Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for Arts & Humanities in the College of Liberal Arts\, and the Alice M. Leahy Memorial Endowment Fund for Excellence.

DESCRIPTION:<div id=\'page_content\' class=\'page_content index\' role=\'main\'><div class=\'content_row clearfix\'>\n<div class=\'content_container clearfix\'>\n<div id=\'lead_content\' class=\'content_row\'>\n<div class=\'content_container\'>\n<div class=\'col-sm-12 article_story\'>\n<div class=\'article_body\'> \nThe Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Auburn University\\, or OLLI at Auburn\\, will host its lecture series titled Wisdom Wednesday’s. OLLI members\\, guests and friends are all invited to learn more about OLLI at Auburn course offerings\\, social engagements and initiatives. \nKara Newby and Alicia Powers with the Hunger Solutions Institute will provide OLLI at Auburn with a presentation regarding food access. What is the status of hunger globally? Nationally? Locally? Why\\, in one of the world’s richest nations\\, do we have citizens who do not know where their next meal is coming from? How does the food system help or hurt those who are struggling? Learn more about some of the barriers\\, and what is being done locally to increase health and food access to our rural neighbors. \nKara Newby serves as operations manager for the Hunger Solutions Institute. She is also an instructor in the Hunger Studies minor teaching the introductory course\\, Hunger: Causes\\, Consequences and Responses. Newby holds a master’s degree in human development and family studies from Auburn. Prior to joining the HSI\\, she worked for several years in the nonprofit sector followed by a five-year tenure as the program manager for Family Science with Ohio State University Extension. \nAlicia Powers serves as the Director of Strategy and Policy for the Hunger Solutions Institute. Powers holds a Ph.D. in nutrition and food systems from the University of Southern Mississippi as well as a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Science in nutrition and food science from Auburn. Prior to joining HSI\\, Powers worked as Extension Specialist/Community Health Coordinator with the Alabama Extension Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education (SNAP-Ed) at Auburn\\, served as an associate professor of health sciences at Furman University and was a founder and key strategist for LiveWell Greenville\\, a coalition of organizations partnering to ensure access to healthy eating and active living opportunities for every Greenville County\\, South Carolina\\, resident. \nOLLI at Auburn offers academic not for credit programs for adults aged 50 years or older through program sites at Auburn University\\, AUM in Montgomery and the Chambers County Public Library in Valley. \nOLLI at Auburn is a program of the Office of the Vice President for University Outreach at Auburn University.
