DESCRIPTION:Come join the Office of Sustainability and the Kreher Preserve and Nature Center for Plant Ahead: A Tree Planting Event. Volunteers are invited to come plant trees at the Kreher Preserve and Nature Center! Together\, we will learn about forestry practices\, Alabama’s native flora\, and how to properly plant trees while enjoying the beautiful outdoor scenery and wildlife of the preserve. A short information session will precede the event!  \nWork will be physical so volunteers should wear clothing that will protect the legs\, clothes you do not mind getting dirty\, and closed-toed shoes. A water cooler will be present\, so please bring a refillable water bottle. Additionally\, volunteers should bring gloves\, if available. Tools and some gloves will be available. Registration is requested\, but not required\, prior to the event. For an event reminder and to help spread the word\, RSVP for the PLANt Ahead event on Facebook. Students can register on the Office of Sustainability GivePulse. Waivers will be signed on site.    \nWe will meet in the parking lot at the Kreher Preserve and Nature Center. Please join us on Thursday\, February 1\, 2024\, from 2:30 PM-4:30 PM at the Kreher Preserve and Nature Center to get outside and plant ahead! DESCRIPTION:The Kreher Preserve and Nature Center needs your help to remove invasive plants and sweetgum trees in order to prepare the area for an upcoming Tree Planting Event! These plants can hinder the growth of the native seedlings we will be planting in January. \nVolunteers should meet at the Kreher Preserve and Nature Center parking lot. Work will begin at 1:00 PM and end at 3:00 PM\, however\, people can come and go as they please. Please wear long pants\, closed-toe shoes\, and gloves. Extra tools will be provided\, but volunteers are encouraged to bring pruners\, lopping shears\, and small pruning saws if available. Signing up ahead of time is appreciated\, however\, registration day of is accepted as well. \nPlease Sign Up On Givepulse!

DESCRIPTION:The Kreher Preserve and Nature Center needs your help to remove invasive plants in order to prepare the area for an upcoming Tree Planting Event. \nVolunteers will learn why invasive plants need to be removed\, learn to identify invasives\, and then work alongside trained individuals to properly remove common invasives including privet\, Elaeagnus\, Callery pear\, chinaberry\, mimosa\, and other common problem plants. \nVolunteers should meet at the Kreher Preserve and Nature Center parking lot. Work will begin at 1:00 PM and end at 4:00 PM\, however\, people can come and go as they please. Signing up ahead of time is appreciated\, however\, registration day of is accepted as well. \nVolunteers should wear long pants\, closed-toe shoes\, and gloves. Extra tools will be provided\, but volunteers are encouraged to bring pruners\, lopping shears\, and small pruning saws if available. \nVolunteers should register on GivePulse.

DESCRIPTION:The KPNC welcomes bat expert Vicky Beckham Smith for an incredible up-close look at bats and their fascinating lives in the dark!  You’ll get to see live native and exotic bats\, as well as learn about the number of bats\, their different sizes\, and why bats are so important.  Then\, we’ll venture out into the woods for a night hike and try to detect some bats ourselves.  We may even spot some bats swooping down for water at the KPNC Turtle Pond. \nThis is a one-hour\, lecture-style program\, followed by a 1-hour night hike\, that will provide exciting and interactive nature education.  Admission is $5 ($4 for members); children 3 and under are free.  Cancelled in the event of rain.  Bring good walking shoes and flashlights.
