Conserving forest biodiversity in an age of humans.” will examine how forest management affects biodiversity across local\, landscape and global scales. Further\, Betts will address the broader question of how to satisfy global wood demand at the least cost to biodiversity and the climate.

DESCRIPTION:Join Auburn University’s College of Forestry\, Wildlife and Environment for their 2024 Fall Seminar Series featuring Dr. Gary E. Machlis as he talks on sustainability and social justice. Key aspects from his new book Sustainability for the Forgotten will be covered followed by a book signing and meet & greet. \nDr. Machlis is a  University Professor of Environmental Sustainability at Clemson University with an extensive background in sustainability efforts which include working with the U.S. National Park Service\, Interior’s Strategic Sciences Group\, and more. He has also helped extensively following large disasters including the Deepwater Horizon oil spill\, Hurricane Sandy\, and Haiti’s devastating earthquake.  \nFaculty\, students\, and the public are invited to attend this program. Advanced registration is not required. Refreshments will be available after the seminar. SUMMARY:75th Anniversary Dean’s Forum & Alumni Social with Dr. Janaki Alavalapati
DESCRIPTION:Auburn University will host a virtual Dean’s Forum and Alumni Social with Dr. Janaki Alavalapati on Thursday\, February 17\, as part of the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences’ 75th Anniversary Celebration. \nDr. Janaki Alavalapati was appointed dean of the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences in 2015. Before that\, he spent eight years as professor and head of the Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation in the College of Natural Resources and Environment at Virginia Tech and several years on the School of Forest Resources and Conservation faculty at the University of Florida. Since he was appointed dean\, Dr. Alavalapati has established several new undergraduate degrees and professional graduate programs and created the student leadership development program\, Forests\, Environment\, and Wildlife Leadership\, or FEWL\, Academy. Under his leadership\, the school has increased student enrollment by over 50%\, the diversity of the school’s faculty by 30%\, and increased the school’s research funding by over 80%. \nDr. Glenn Glover\, alumnus and emeritus professor\, will serve as moderator of the question-and-answer forum. Following the discussion\, attendees are invited to remain on the Zoom to participate in the Alumni Social. \nThe forum and social is open to faculty\, staff\, students\, and the school’s alumni via Zoom from 6 – 7 p.m. CT and will be live-streamed via the school’s Facebook page.
