SUMMARY:Mending Night
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Mending Night on January 27th from 5:30 – 8:30 PM in the RBD Library’s Innovation and Research Commons! We’ll have sewing machines\, supplies\, and dedicated stations for hemming pants\, sewing buttons\, patching holes\, and upcycling pieces into something new. No prior sewing experience? No problem! Fashion students and volunteers will be there to guide you through every step. \nBring your worn-out or damaged clothes and give them a second life instead of tossing them away. Learn a new skill\, meet new friends\, and make sustainable choices – all in one night! \n  \nThis event is put on in partnership with:\n\n\nAU Libraries\nOsher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI)\nApparel Merchandising and Design Association (AMDA)\n\nAUinvolve Link

SUMMARY:The Skyscraper Curse: And How Austrian Economics Predicted Every Major Economic Crisis of the Last Century
DESCRIPTION:Auburn University Libraries’ next Discover Auburn Lecture Series will host Mark Thornton’s book talk on “The Skyscraper Curse: And How Austrian Economics Predicted Every Major Economic Crisis of the Last Century.”\n“The Skyscraper Curse” is Thornton’s definitive work on booms and busts\, and it explains why only Austrian economists really understand them. It makes business cycle theory accessible to a whole new 21st-century audience. His book is a warning about overheated equity markets\, over-inflated housing prices and clueless central bankers. His now-infamous Skyscraper Index theory draws the connection between loose monetary policy\, artificially low interest rates and vanity construction projects. \nThornton is an instructor in the Department of Economics at Auburn University. He completed his bachelor of arts at St. Bonaventure University in 1982. A few years later\, Thornton became an alumni after earning his doctorate degree in economics in 1989. His research interests include public policy\, economic history and business cycles. \nThe program is open to the public and a reception will follow the lecture. Past lectures in the series may be viewed <a href='https://www.lib.auburn.edu/discoverauburn/'>online</a>.

Based on four years of fieldwork\\, this eye-opening assessment plays out in a mixed-race Georgia community that hosted the first nuclear power reactors sanctioned by the government in three decades. \nThe program will take place in the Caroline Marshall Draughon Auditorium on the ground floor of the Ralph Brown Draughon Library and is open to the public. A reception will follow. \n</div>
