SUMMARY:Science Fiction & Dystopian Futures: Approaching The Circle from an Anthropological Perspective
DESCRIPTION:This talk examines how central themes within the history of anthropology—civilization\\, progress\\, freedom—are used in science fiction to address anxieties about our collective future. The Common Book\\, The Circle by Dave Eggers\\, builds and expands upon classic and contemporary fiction about utopias and dystopias. For example\\, The Circle’s concerns about freedom\\, knowledge\\, and community are shared by Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World and beyond. As Eggers argues\\, utopias are rarely as idyllic as they may seem. This talk draws connections between The Circle and classic science fiction texts\\, demonstrating how an anthropological approach can help us understand our ever-changing society and fears about where we are going.\nDr. Christopher Berk is a visiting instructor of anthropology in the Department of Sociology\\, Anthropology\\, and Social Work.

SUMMARY:Digital Democracy: The Role of Technology in Political Inclusion & Participation
DESCRIPTION:Increasingly the way citizens interact with government and complete government transactions relies on technology. While this evolution has facilitated greater access to political information and heightened citizen expectations for government responsiveness\\, many remain excluded from the political process. Highlighting themes from\\, The Circle\\, this talk focuses on these and other issues that have arisen in response to increased citizen interaction with government through technology. Special attention will also be paid to the ways in which technology can be used to both include and exclude citizens from the democratic process and the effect of technology on political discussion\\, mobilization\\, and engagement.\n \nBridgett A. King\\, PhD\\, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science and Master of Public Administration Program at Auburn University. Dr. King teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in state and local government\\, American government\\, the Presidency\\, political participation\\, and public policy. She is also an instructor in the Election Center Certified Elections/Registration Administrator (CERA) Program. \nHer primary research interests include political participation\\, public policy\\, citizen voting experiences\\, and race and ethnicity. She is currently working on projects that address the relationship between state-level voting policies like voter ID and felony disenfranchisement on voter turnout\\, citizen confidence in electoral outcomes\\, and the role of non-profits in civic engagement.

SUMMARY:Technology\, Progress\, & Choice
DESCRIPTION:Why do we assume that technological change — especially in the realm of information technology — is inherently progressive? Who gets to decide what counts as “progress\\,” and why? Using The Circle’s dystopian tale of a privacy-free\\, technologically-saturated culture of surveillance as a starting point\\, Dr. Lucsko will explore the historical relationship between technological change and social\\, cultural\\, and individual progress.\nDr. David Lucsko is an associate professor and the chair of the History Department.
