DESCRIPTION:The KPNC welcomes bat expert Vicky Beckham Smith for an incredible up-close look at bats and their fascinating lives in the dark!  You’ll get to see live native and exotic bats\, as well as learn about the number of bats\, their different sizes\, and why bats are so important.  Then\, we’ll venture out into the woods for a night hike and try to detect some bats ourselves.  We may even spot some bats swooping down for water at the KPNC Turtle Pond. \nThis is a one-hour\, lecture-style program\, followed by a 1-hour night hike\, that will provide exciting and interactive nature education.  Admission is $5 ($4 for members); children 3 and under are free.  Cancelled in the event of rain.  Bring good walking shoes and flashlights.

DESCRIPTION:May 17-21 is National Bike to Work Week\, part of Bike Month sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists. The Auburn Bicycle Committee and the Auburn University Offices of Transportation Services and Sustainability would like to honor your personal commitment to eco-friendly transportation on National Bike to Work Day\, Friday 21 May. There will be two Energizer Stations on the AU campus where you can stop by\, chat with like-minded bike commuters\, and enjoy fresh coffee and donuts. You’re out there fighting in the streets for a better planet\, reward yourself with a little treat and the camaraderie of your fellow cycle commuters! \nThe stations will be located on Ross Square near Samford Hall\, and on South Donahue along the multi-use trail between Woodfield Drive and Lem Morrison Drive. Representatives from AU Transportation Services will be at both locations to provide an update on their E-Bike AU Initiative\, an electric bike-share program that will be starting up this coming fall. \nBring along a mug for your coffee and a mask to protect your fellow cyclists. From the “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor” to the Aria and Three Variations from the Goldberg Variations; from The Art of the Fugue to “Brandenburg Concerto No. 3\,” Kibbey and the Dover Quartet will dazzle and captivate the audience.An acclaimed soloist and chamber musician who has toured and recorded with Dawn Upshaw and Placido Domingo\, Kibbey brings virtuosic brilliance and musical charisma to all she plays. As The New York Times wrote\, “[She makes] it seem as though her instrument [has] been waiting all its life to explode with the gorgeous colors and energetic figures she was getting from it.” \nKibbey pairs with the phenomenal Dover Quartet\, praised by Strad for “their exceptional interpretative maturity\, tonal refinement\, and taut ensemble.” The quartet catapulted to international stardom following a stunning sweep at the 2013 Banff Competition\, at which they won every prize. SUMMARY:Zakir Hussain & Masters of Percussion
DESCRIPTION:Zakir Hussain is appreciated both in the field of percussion and in the music world at large as an international phenomenon and one of the greatest musicians of our time. A classical tabla virtuoso\, he has elevated the status of his instrument both in India and around the world. His consistently brilliant and exciting performances have established him as a national treasure in India and one of his country’s foremost cultural ambassadors. Zakir’s playing is marked by uncanny intuition and masterful improvisational dexterity\, founded in formidable knowledge and study.  \nWidely considered a chief architect of the contemporary world music movement\, Hussain’s many historic collaborations include Shakti\, the fusion band he founded with John McLaughlin and L. Shankar\, Remember Shakti\, Planet Drum with the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart\, and recordings and performances with artists as diverse as George Harrison\, Yo-Yo Ma\, Joe Henderson\, Van Morrison and Pharoah Sanders\, among many others.  \nA child prodigy\, Hussain was touring by the age of 12. In 1970\, he performed his first U.S. concert at the Fillmore East in New York City with Pandit Ravi Shankar\, embarking on an illustrious international career. In 1987\, his first solo release\, Making Music\, was acclaimed as “one of the most inspired East-West fusion albums ever recorded.” In 1992\, Planet Drum\, an album co-created and produced by Hussain and Mickey Hart\, became the first recording to win a Grammy in the Best World Music category.

DESCRIPTION:Crank Down in Tigertown will take place in the Chewacla State Park on April 17-18\, 2021. \nThe course at this park will use a combination of tight and twisty single track and wide dirt roads to test the racer’s fitness and bike handling skills.  The seemingly flat course is deceiving as the constant up/down results in 381 feet of elevation gain per HS lap. \nSpectators bring your noisemakers because as the trail meanders through the woods\, there are several opportunities to see the race unfolding from your seats in the infield area. Don’t let the lap distances fool you\, lap times on this course will be on par with other\, longer courses this season.
