DESCRIPTION:The Kreher Preserve and Nature Center needs your help to remove invasive plants and sweetgum trees in order to prepare the area for an upcoming Tree Planting Event! These plants can hinder the growth of the native seedlings we will be planting in January. \nVolunteers should meet at the Kreher Preserve and Nature Center parking lot. Work will begin at 1:00 PM and end at 3:00 PM\, however\, people can come and go as they please. Please wear long pants\, closed-toe shoes\, and gloves. Extra tools will be provided\, but volunteers are encouraged to bring pruners\, lopping shears\, and small pruning saws if available. DESCRIPTION:Every year\, Auburn’s Alternative Student Breaks (ASB) and Black Student Union (BSU) collaborate on a day of service and education to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. This year\, due to COVID-19\, there are on-campus and remote options for our MLK Day of Service. All participants must register through GivePulse\, and on-campus participants must additionally RSVP for the event on AU Involve. \nOn-Campus Participants:\n12:30 – Students arrive for lunch from Zoe’s Kitchen\n12:40 – “A Trip Through History” presentation given by ASB and BSU members\n1:00 – Dr. Bernard Lafayette of Tuskegee speaks\, Q&A\n1:30 – Begin United Way service project\n2:30 – Day of Service Ends \nRemote Participants:\nOn-campus participants will be packaging care packages for the Domestic Violence Intervention Center and the residents of EASE House\, an apartment community for senior citizens. We will be including friendly letters with words of encouragement in each package. As an alternative\, remote participants can email asb@auburn.edu a letter for us to print and include in our care packages. Remote participants will gain 1 hour of service for sending a letter in. Additionally\, our Day of Service will be streamed through Eagle Eye for remote participants who wish to watch.

SUMMARY:Public Lecture: Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Stefan Kuks\, visiting international scholar in the Department of Political Science and one of Europe’s leading experts governmental response to climate change\, will give a lecture “Built on Water – The Delta Program of the Netherlands” which will examine how Holland – where half of the country’s population lives below the sea level – is dealing with climate change. The talk will discuss efforts taken by the Dutch which mitigate the adverse impacts of rising sea levels and will compare the country’s effort with efforts undertaken in southern Florida.Kuks is professor of Public Policy and Public Administration at the University of Twente in the Netherlands and serves as Chair of the National Steering Committee for the Delta Program on Spatial Adaptation in the Netherlands.The talk will be held on Monday\, January 24th from 4:00 – 5:00 in Mell Classroom Building 2550 and is open to all students\, faculty and staff as well as the public.

DESCRIPTION:Come join the Office of Sustainability and the Kreher Preserve and Nature Center for Plant Ahead: A Tree Planting Event. Volunteers are invited to come plant short-leaf pine trees at the Kreher Preserve and Nature Center. Together\, we will learn about forestry practices\, Alabama’s native flora\, and how to properly plant trees while enjoying the beautiful outdoor scenery and wildlife of the preserve.   \nWork will be physical so volunteers should wear long pants and closed-toed shoes and bring their own water bottle. Additionally\, volunteers should bring gloves\, pruners\, and lopping shears if available. Some extra tools & gloves will be available. Registration is requested\, but not required\, prior to the event on the Office of Sustainability GivePulse. Waivers will be signed on-site.    \nWe will meet in the parking lot at the Kreher Preserve and Nature Center. Please join us on Tuesday\, January 25\, 2022\, from 2:30 PM-4:30 PM at the Kreher Preserve and Nature Center to get outside and plant ahead! The rain date is February 22nd at the same time and location. If you need transportation to the event\, please contact the Office of Sustainability about a shuttle to the KPNC. \nPlease register on the GivePulse prior to the event.

DESCRIPTION:Litter from across Auburn’s campus gets washed into storm drains and is delivered to the local Parkerson Mill Creek. Alabama Watershed Stewards with Auburn Water Resources Center and Risk Management are accepting volunteers for an afternoon litter pickup at the creek. \nThe pickup will be Thursday\, Feb. 17\, from 2-4 p.m. Participants will meet outside the wellness kitchen at Parkerson Mill Creek. \nParticipants should wear waterproof shoes and clothes they do not mind getting dirty. DESCRIPTION:Auburn University will host a virtual Dean’s Forum and Alumni Social with Dr. Janaki Alavalapati on Thursday\, February 17\, as part of the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences’ 75th Anniversary Celebration. \nDr. Janaki Alavalapati was appointed dean of the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences in 2015. Before that\, he spent eight years as professor and head of the Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation in the College of Natural Resources and Environment at Virginia Tech and several years on the School of Forest Resources and Conservation faculty at the University of Florida. Since he was appointed dean\, Dr. Alavalapati has established several new undergraduate degrees and professional graduate programs and created the student leadership development program\, Forests\, Environment\, and Wildlife Leadership\, or FEWL\, Academy. Under his leadership\, the school has increased student enrollment by over 50%\, the diversity of the school’s faculty by 30%\, and increased the school’s research funding by over 80%. \nDr. Glenn Glover\, alumnus and emeritus professor\, will serve as moderator of the question-and-answer forum. Following the discussion\, attendees are invited to remain on the Zoom to participate in the Alumni Social. \nThe forum and social is open to faculty\, staff\, students\, and the school’s alumni via Zoom from 6 – 7 p.m. CT and will be live-streamed via the school’s Facebook page.
