SUMMARY:Telling Our Stories: A Democracy & the Informed Citizen Program
DESCRIPTION:Members of the PACERS Newspaper Network have produced newspapers in the last year that document life and people in Pintlala\, Camp Hill\, Beatrice and Packer’s Bend. Intergenerational newspaper staff in each rural community edited and produced their papers. \nPulitzer Prize winning journalist Maura Casey feels strongly that rural communities must tell their own stories in this way\, so she’ll join us for the event. In addition to a keynote from Maura (10:30 – 11:15am)\, the event will include breakout sessions (1:00 – 3:00pm) organized by the PACERS Newspaper Network. \nOther partners include the David Mathews Center for Civic Life and the Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts and Humanities in the College of Liberal Arts at Auburn University. \nNo registration fee is required.  Maura Casey’s 10:30am keynote address will also be livestreamed on the Alabama Humanities Alliance Facebook page. SUMMARY:Draughon Seminars in State & Local History
DESCRIPTION:“Come Now\, and Let Us Reason Together”: Cooperative Extension Clubs Empowerment of African American Farm Women and Girls\, 1928-1965 with Dr. Shari L. Williams. \nAfrican American women played a crucial role in the Black Freedom Struggle in the United States\, and one significant but overlooked contribution of their leadership development was participation in United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Negro Cooperative Extension home demonstration and 4-H clubs. In addition to learning skills related to cooking\, cleaning\, canning\, sewing and other domestic chores\, many assumed leadership roles in Alabama neighborhood clubs and county-level councils\, and\, over time\, club activities became an intergenerational emancipatory realm of personal fulfillment and citizenship rights consciousness. Focusing on Alabama from 1928-1965\, and\, especially\, the life and work of Macon County’s Laura Randolph Day\, Dr. Williams uses historical and genealogical research to explain how Daly’s work was grounded in and enhanced by existing Afrocentric kinship\, community\, and religious beliefs and cultural practices. \nRegister to receive a Zoom link.
