SUMMARY:A Tree's View of History: A Conversation with Lacy M. Johnson
DESCRIPTION:The Forest School at the Yale School of the Environment\, Orion Magazine\, and the Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology present a conversation with Lacy M. Johnson on American history and the longleaf pine. Building off her recent linked essay on the longleaf pine’s integral role in the American slave trade\, Johnson will discuss the ways in which trees bear witness to the evolution of culture and what they may be able to tell us about ourselves now. She will also discuss how her research into coastal flooding has expanded her understanding of how rising water levels affect trees\, and what people can do to protect the landscapes they love. In conversation with her will be Mary Evelyn Tucker\, co-author of Journey of the Universe and co-founder of Yale’s Forum on Religion and Ecology. \nRegister via this link.

SUMMARY:Native Habit Project's Kyle Lybarger Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Lybarger is a forester and social media figure working to promote native plants and grassland conservation. He explores Alabama and identifies a variety of native plant wildlife — often from just wandering roadsides\, trails\, and open fields. His findings have helped restore a number of Alabama’s dwindling grasslands. He was the first known person to find purple milkweed in Alabama and the first to document Durand Oak\, a plant that typically thrives in prairies. \nAfter an increase in social media popularity\, the Alabama A&M alum co-founded the Native Habitat Project with his friends Alan Summerford\, an Auburn agricultural economics alum\, and Jake Brown\, an Auburn environmental engineering alum. \nThe Native Habitat Project strives to support habitat restoration efforts across Alabama. It provides a variety of services such as property consultations\, native plantings\, wildlife management plans\, forestry consulting\, prescribed burning\, and brand partnerships. \nLybarger’s social media platforms have made him a well-known voice in Alabama as a leading naturalist and advocate for grassland restoration. \nPizza will be served to attendees! \nQuestions can be directed to Dr. Ryan Thomson .
