SUMMARY:Narratives of Obeah in West Indian Literature: Moving Through the Margins
DESCRIPTION:Assistant Professor of English and Women’s Studies faculty affiliate Dr. Janelle Rodriques presents a lecture on her recent monograph\, Narratives of Obeah in West Indian Literature: Moving Through the Margins. The book explores representations of Obeah\, a name used in the English/Creole-speaking Caribbean to describe various African-derived\, syncretic Caribbean religious practices\, across a range of prose fictions published in the 20th century by West Indian authors. This lecture will be live-streamed from the Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts and Humanities at Pebble Hill\, using their Facebook streaming platform.

SUMMARY:Mitochondria: The Powerhouses of Life // Science Cafe
DESCRIPTION:This event will be presented by Drs. Wendy Hood and Jeff Yap\, Kyle Heine\, Hailey Parry\, Paulo Mesquita\, Emma Rhodes\, and LouAnn Crosby\, who will be discussing “Mitochondria: the powerhouses of life.” The talk will highlight how the small intracellular organelles’\, referred to as mitochondria\, power the lives of animals and other organisms. The group will discuss the structure and function of mitochondria and their work. Their research suggests that these tiny powerhouses control relative reproductive performance\, determine why some animals migrate and why some animals get fat easily\, while others do not. They will also describe their work that suggests how mitochondria change with exercise and age.
