SUMMARY:Passion project: Historical Significance of Selma’s ‘Bloody Sunday’
DESCRIPTION:Approaching Selma\, Alabama\, from the south on Highway 80\, the iconic Edmund Pettus Bridge looms large on the horizon as travelers begin the incline to cross the Alabama River. \nMost drivers may not notice the 300-yard area before the bridge—now a dilapidated row of mostly boarded-up businesses long since shuttered—or even realize they are traveling through a historic site until they happen to catch a glimpse of the modest memorial park located to the bridge’s southeast as they head downtown. Two Auburn University professors—Richard Burt and Keith Hébert—are committed to changing that\, as the four-lane roadway that heads toward the bridge was the site of one of the most seminal moments of the history of civil rights.

SUMMARY:Becoming the Beloved Community Amid the Fragility of Democracy and White Supremacy
DESCRIPTION:The Auburn University College of Liberal Arts will host a public virtual dialogue\, on “Becoming the Beloved Community Amid the Fragility of Democracy and White Supremacy\,” in commemoration of the 56th anniversary of Bloody Sunday at the Edmund Pettus Bridge\, Selma\, AL. \nEveryone is invited to register for this event. Participants will contribute to a conversation that unpacks the question of\, “Has American democracy always been fragile within the historical context of pre-and-post the American Civil War and slavery\, racial injustice\, white supremacy\, classism\, civil religion and voter suppression?” \nThe panelists are: Bernard LaFayette\, Civil Rights Activist who played a leading role in organizing the Selma Voting Rights Movement in the 1960s and author of In Peace and Freedom: My Journey in Selma. LaFayette and the late Congressman John Lewis were roommates in seminary and became lifelong friends. Bridgett King\, Auburn University associate professor and the Master of Public Administration Program Director. Her research has appeared in the Journal of Black Studies\, Social Science Quarterly\, Government Information Quarterly\, Policy Studies and the Journal of Information Technology and Politics. She is currently working on an original book manuscript that focuses on the experience of Black election administrators. Wayne Flynt\, professor emeritus in the Department of History\, editor-in-chief of the Online Encyclopedia of Alabama and author of numerous books including\, Alabama: The History of a Deep South State focuses on Southern culture\, Alabama politics\, Southern religion\, education reform and poverty. \n“Becoming the Beloved Community requires difficult conversations and we are fortunate to have three distinguished perspectives in conversation at this virtual gathering\,” said Mark Wilson\, director of the Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts & Humanities. \nThe Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts & Humanities in Auburn University’s College of Liberal Arts creates opportunities for people to explore our individual and collective experiences\, values\, and identities through the creativity of the arts and the wisdom of the humanities.

SUMMARY:Hoops for Trees
DESCRIPTION:Hoops for Trees is a green initiative aimed at  increase urban forest canopy\, improve water quality and provide numerous other social\, environmental and economic benefits on the areas across Alabama. Through this tree planting program\, the aim is to bring awareness to Urban Forestry and  help establish the next generation of urban foresters\, arborist and horticulturist as they’re taught how to plant trees correctly and have a little  fun as well.  Planting locations has been selected by city  personnel. Trees will  be planted at Sam Harris Park where the trees will help with a buffer zone\, erosion mitigation\, shade\, wildlife habitat and other benefits are needed. The overall goal with this event is to increase visibility of the urban forest scenario and teach students about selecting and planting trees. \nA basketball game of horse will be played and if you stay in\, you keep playing and if you miss and lose out of the game\, then you go plant a tree.

DESCRIPTION:Opelika’s Azalea & Dogwood Trail begins at the corner of 8th Street and 2nd Avenue. Green directional arrows instruct drivers throughout the trail. Directions are also available at the Keep Opelika Beautiful website and the Opelika Chamber of Commerce office. The trial is approximately 5 miles long. \nTwo highlights of the Azalea & Dogwood Trail are Mr. and Mrs. Mike Newman’s residence. With over 800 azalea shrubs\, the yard is a beautiful sight. The other highlight is the Caroline Dean Wildflower Trail. This is a great opportunity to walk through the beautiful flower trail.

She will talk about her time at Auburn and her roles as chief ranger and lead supervisor of the Appalachian/Piedmont Zone Wildlife and Land Fire Program\, which serves 22 parks in the Southeast. \nThe “7 for 75 Speaker Series” is designed to feature distinguished alumni and industry leaders representing an array of forestry\, wildlife and natural resource fields and enterprises. DESCRIPTION:Although the presentation format is virtual\, this year’s “Auburn Research: Student Symposium” offers Auburn University and Auburn University Montgomery students a unique venue for showcasing their research and creative scholarship to a broad audience. Nearly 350 student presentations are expected for the symposium. \nThis year’s event\, instead of the typical live presentations\, is being conducted virtually. Podium presentations will be delivered live via Zoom\, with presenters assigned a specified time.
