SUMMARY:Student Energy Summit
DESCRIPTION:The primary focus of the Student Summit is student engagement\, education\, and awareness through two 90-minute sessions beginning at 11:00AM and 2:00PM. The first 90-minute session is part of the Appalachian Energy Summit and will include speakers focused on energy and climate action and is aimed to educate. The second session is where we will give students more opportunity to interact through open breakout rooms. There will be three available rooms focusing on food/zero waste\, an energy careers panel\, and climate action. \nThe Summit Poster Competition is another part of the summit that provides a platform for students to present their energy-related research. Chosen poster participants will have the opportunity to present their research to industry experts. (Please note – the Summit Poster Competition involves a separate application process from the AES Summit application. Students interested in participating in the poster competition must complete both applications for consideration.) \nRegistration is required.

SUMMARY:Passion project: Historical Significance of Selma’s ‘Bloody Sunday’
DESCRIPTION:Approaching Selma\, Alabama\, from the south on Highway 80\, the iconic Edmund Pettus Bridge looms large on the horizon as travelers begin the incline to cross the Alabama River. \nMost drivers may not notice the 300-yard area before the bridge—now a dilapidated row of mostly boarded-up businesses long since shuttered—or even realize they are traveling through a historic site until they happen to catch a glimpse of the modest memorial park located to the bridge’s southeast as they head downtown. Two Auburn University professors—Richard Burt and Keith Hébert—are committed to changing that\, as the four-lane roadway that heads toward the bridge was the site of one of the most seminal moments of the history of civil rights.
