DESCRIPTION:Ride at your own pace through the beautiful historic homes in downtown Opelika. This is a self-led tour. The Victorian Front Porch Tour features homes that have been transformed into a colorful\, nostalgic reminder of Christmas from a simpler era. \nOpelika’s Northside Historic District is celebrating Christmas like it’s 1899! For five days in early December\, 60 historic homes in downtown Opelika are transformed into a colorful\, nostalgic reminder of Christmas from a simpler era. The event is a self driving tour except for Saturday night when the streets are closed for visitors to stroll through the neighborhood. The admission to this spectacular production is free.

They’ll also explore all the other red things they might find in nature! Then\, they’ll return to a warm campfire\, hot chocolate\, crafts\, and more. \nThis year’s HoHoHo Hike has a new twist! Hikers will visit stations along a well-marked trail to pick up and learn a little about some of nature’s beautiful treasures. Hikers will use these items to create beautiful\, custom nature frames for holiday photos. A fun holiday photo opportunity will be set up in the Nature Playground for you to take a family photo. Children will be able to wave at Santa who will be safely nestled in his tree house workshop! Covid-19 might change how we do things\, but it can’t stop the fun!

DESCRIPTION:OID\, University Outreach and the National Forum for Black Public Administrators is hosting the annual MLK Celebration Breakfast. This year’s theme\, Honoring the Dream: Exploring 21st Century Civic Engagement and Advocacy\, will highlight members of our community who are working to impact social change on the local level. While the experience will be virtual\, tradition will be upheld the tradition of breaking bread together by providing two options for breakfast. Auburn Alumnus Chef Justin Robinson will provide a cooking experience option for all attendees and there will alternatively be an option to purchase and pick-up a breakfast meal provided by local vendors: Lucy’s (locally-owned Auburn Restaurant) or Jahvon’s (locally-owned Opelika restaurant). DESCRIPTION:The Department of History Black History Speaker Series will feature Dr. Nicole Ivy on Feb. 16 at 11 a.m. on Zoom. Ivy will discuss “On Historical Tableaux and J. Marion Sims’s Montgomery Clinic.” \nNicole Ivy is a historical thinker and professional futurist who is passionate about the arts and social change. Her professional and scholarly interests include strategic foresight\, public history\, visual culture and inclusive change management. She earned her B.A. in english from the University of Florida and her joint PhD in African American Studies and American Studies from Yale University. She has received numerous academic appointments and awards\, including as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the History Department at Indiana University\, Bloomington\, or IUB\, and a postdoctoral fellow of the Center for Research on Race and Ethnicity in Society\, or CRRES\, at IUB. She also works widely in the museum field\, having begun her museum practice as an Institute of Museum and Library Services\, or IMLS\, Curatorial Fellow at the African American Museum in Philadelphia. She has held several inaugural positions at the American Alliance of Museums\, including serving as its first Director of Inclusion. She is an assistant professor of American Studies at The George Washington University.

DESCRIPTION:Rhett Johnson served as the director of the Solon Dixon Forestry Education Center managed by the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences. Additionally\, he co-founded of The Longleaf Alliance where he held positions as its president and board member. He has also served as chair of the Southeastern Society of American Foresters and president of the Alabama Wildlife Federation. \nJohnson earned a bachelor’s degree from North Carolina State University in wildlife biology and a master’s in forest management from Clemson University. His professional interests and expertise include threatened and endangered species\, multiple-use forest management\, wildlife management\, fire ecology\, and longleaf pine management and restoration. \nThe event is open to the public via Zoom and will be live-streamed via the school’s Facebook page. \nThe “7 for 75 Speaker Series” features distinguished alumni and industry leaders representing an array of forestry\, wildlife and natural resource fields and enterprises who will cover a wide range of topics\, from land management to current and future technology to stakeholder engagement. \n
