Rural Studio: Educating the Citizen Architect

Rusty Smith, associate director of Rural Studio in the College of Architecture, Design, and Construction, is presenting a talk on the programs 25 years of leadership in the area of Public Interest Design. Rural Studio, a world-renowned architectural education program, features a unique hands on approach where students work in partnership with neighbors in a community to design and build projects. Using an ethos of recycling, reusing, and remaking, projects focus on fixing insecurities relative to income, energy, food, and health, and small home affordability solutions among many other things. Located in the small town of Newbern, AL, it has completed a total of 200+ finished projects, and educated more than 900 Citizen Architects.
